Long Stretches and Milk Supply (0-12 weeks)

As you follow the advice set forth in the Will I Ever Sleep Again? newborn class, you will be working on a gradual lengthening of time between night feedings. As your baby is going longer and longer at night without a feeding, she will nurse more aggressively during the day to get those extra calories.

Please continue to offer full feedings every 2.5 to 3 hours all day long to maintain your supply. Our goal is to match your milk supply with your baby’s intake. Typically, this is NOT a problem as we are not attempting an abrupt drop of feedings.

Once babies are sleeping through the night (8+ hours), some moms find that pumping before they go to sleep at night is helpful. If you do notice a drop in your milk supply, please pump before bed and again at 3 to 4 am. For most who take this class, it is not an issue at all.
